About me

Hello! I'm Sophie, and I live in York, UK, with my sausage dog, Luna. I studied Fine Art Painting at University, so you could say I am slightly obsessed with colour.

My previous career before Yarn, I ran a successful house plant business, called geo-fleur. I had a plant shop in East London, selling unusal houseplants and succulents. I also made my own ceramic pots, and ran a subscription service called "Plant Post Club" which each month you were sent an indoor house plant in a handmade plant pot. Unfortunately, things had to change and I was forced to close the business.

Therefore, I found the silver lining and set up Botanical yarn in 2018. Founded by my love of knitting and crochet, and by searching for the right shade of yarn on the right base, I decided to start dyeing my own yarn in my kitchen.

Fast fowards two years later, and I've also set up Yorkshire Yarn Festival, which at the moment in the current pandemic is a monthly online virtual yarn festival- showcasing dyers, makers and designers from around the world. And when the pandemic allows, I will continue organising and curating Physical yarn shows, around Yorkshire.

Botanical yarn dyes yarn inspired by all things botanical. My colourways are inspired by indoor and outdoor plants, including a variety of flowers.

My passion for plants has grown over years of collecting indoor plants, and writing a book about plants, called Living with Plants, which is available at most bookstores.

Most of my yarn is dye to order so if you are looking for a jumper quantity of yarn, please just get in touch, or click my Dyed to Order section on my website.
